ebm-papst ESM fans for refrigerated display cases: continuous efficiency in retail refrigeration

ESM fans from ebm-papst are energy-saving solutions for continuously operating refrigerated cabinets, freezers and display cases.

In supermarket refrigerated and freezer cabinets, ventilation operates continuously to maintain a stable food storage temperature. Therefore, the choice of fan directly impacts not only the reliability of the appliance but also the energy consumption of the entire refrigerated cabinet.

This is where ebm-papst's energy-saving ESM fans come in. These solutions are designed for 24-hour continuous operation and meet the specific needs of commercial refrigeration. In refrigerated cabinets, the energy used by fans represents a significant cost factor, especially when the application operates 24/7.

Ventilation in refrigerated cabinets: a balance between efficiency, reliability, and safety

Inside refrigerated counters, freezers, and display cases, the fan contributes to the proper distribution of cold air, promoting temperature uniformity and maintaining ideal product preservation conditions. This component, often hidden from view, is crucial to the system's continued operation.

For this reason, fans intended for retail refrigeration must be efficient, reliable, and suitable for continuous operation . ebm-papst also highlights that its solutions for refrigerated and freezer cabinets are designed for a wide range of installations and comply with the EN 60335-2-89 standard, an aspect that is also important when flammable refrigerants are used.

ESM: the energy-saving motor for 24-hour applications

The heart of the ebm-papst proposal for this application is the ESM - Energy Saving Motor , developed to reduce consumption in devices that work for long periods, such as refrigerated cabinets and freezers.

Compared to traditional shaded-pole motors, ESM motors achieve an efficiency level of over 65%, which ebm-papst claims is more than three times higher than traditional solutions of this type. This allows for a rapid return on investment, especially in situations where the fan is required to operate continuously.

A further advantage is linked to the reduction of self-heating during operation: less heat produced by the engine also means less heat to dissipate inside the refrigerated area, with benefits for the overall energy balance of the cabinet.

Compactness and control to fit refrigerated counters

Commercial refrigeration applications require compact components that can fit into small spaces without sacrificing performance. The ebm-papst range includes solutions for installation in refrigerated and freezer cabinets , such as the W1G series, and solutions designed for the rear wall of refrigerated display cases, such as the K1G range, specifically designed for applications where available space is limited.

This aspect is particularly important in retail outlets, where energy efficiency must coexist with space constraints, operational continuity, and proper product display. In a refrigerated display case, the fan must not only move air: it must do so consistently, quietly, and efficiently, contributing to the stability of internal conditions.

In addition to motor efficiency, ESM offers features designed to make fan management more flexible. These include the ability to automatically adopt a lower operating speed during the night , a useful feature in retail applications to adapt the cabinet's operation to different usage conditions.

ebm-papst also offers speed programming solutions, with a dedicated unit that allows the two preset speeds of the energy-saving fans to be easily reprogrammed. This allows the system to be adapted to the needs of the application, both during production and during field service activities.

Flexible integration and retrofit for more efficient refrigeration

To expand control options, the ESM+ interface module allows you to add a 0-10 VDC control input and a +10 V voltage output to the motor, useful for example for directly powering external pressure or temperature sensors without the need for an additional power supply. The module also provides a tachometric signal for speed monitoring. Low-voltage 24 VDC ESM fans are also available, designed for refrigerated cabinets with low-voltage LED lighting: in this version, the 0-10 VDC input and tacho signal are already integrated, without the need for the interface module.

Designed for long-term, maintenance-free operation, ESM energy-saving fans typically last more than 60,000 hours , depending on environmental conditions. This is particularly important for retail applications where continuity of service is essential. Thanks to the energy savings it offers, ESM represents an attractive solution for both new installations and retrofits on existing refrigerated cabinets, aiming to reduce consumption, improve ventilation management, and contribute to more efficient commercial refrigeration over the long term.

More efficient retail refrigeration, day after day

In supermarkets and food retail outlets, refrigerated cabinets are critical: they must ensure preservation, continuous operation, and controlled consumption. ebm-papst ESM fans meet these needs with technology designed to operate continuously, reduce energy waste, and adapt to different commercial refrigeration configurations.

In an industry where even small efficiency improvements can generate significant benefits over time, choosing high-performance fans becomes a strategic element for optimizing operating costs and making refrigerated cabinet management more sustainable.

FAQ
